2016-2017 Updates

We are very excited to announce that this year we are partnering with the Lone Star Storytelling Festival!

Astraios musicians will be performing on October 14th and 15th, providing music in the lobby of Frisco City Hall between story sessions. Ruth Ann Ritchie (flute) and Jaymee Haefner (harp) will perform on Friday the 14th, and Ruth Ann, Natasha Merchant (oboe), and Michael Jones (bassoon) will perform the evening of the 15th. The Lone Star Storytelling Festival is a fantastic event run by the Frisco Public Library which features national award-winning storytellers and performances by young local students. Be sure to come both evenings and say hello to some of your favorite musicians! Click here for more information.

What about our regular concerts in the City Council Chambers, you ask? Back in June, we submitted our request for three dates for a 2016-2017 concert season. We were told that our dates shouldn’t be a problem, but like so many things for a young city trying to build an arts scene, nothing moves quickly! Our request is on the agenda for a September 6th City Council meeting, and if (when) it become official, we’ll give you the dates. You can email your support of our programs to the Frisco City Council and let them know you find us a valuable asset for the city. Meanwhile, the projects themselves are under development—all we’re waiting for is the venue! Here’s what we have planned:

~Better Than One Harp Duo: Jaymee Haefner is the Assistant Professor of Harp at the University of North Texas and a graduate of Indiana University's reknowned harp program. (Ruth Ann and Jaymee used to play weddings together around southern Indiana—sometime ask about the wedding with Mickey Mouse.) Jaymee will be performing with harpist Emily Mitchell, who is on faculty at Stephen F. Austin University.

~Jeremy Reynolds (newly tenured Associate Professor of Clarinet at the University of Denver) will return to perform a trio concert with Ruth Ann and Michael. Jeremy has performed for us several times before, most recently on our Gala Concert in April 2015. (He also serves on the Astraios Board.)

~We will welcome the DFW Brass later in the spring. This brass quintet is made of faculty members at local colleges and members of orchestras such as the Plano Symphony and the Dallas Opera Orchestra.

In addition, we also plan to return to the Frisco Heritage Museum’s Third Sunday Open Houses for their Christmas festivities and are already scheduling concerts in the Frisco Elementary Schools.

And if you’re missing Astraios, you can get special access to videos that are not available to the public by making a donation. We will see you again very soon!
