November 2016

We were thrilled to feature Jaymee Haefner and Emily Mitchell as the Better Than One Harp Duo on November 13.

Jaymee and Emily explained how the harp (and especially the pedals) worked, and also talked through several techniques harpists use to create a variety of sounds. Their program featured many works originally written for piano four hands (two people playing one piano), three Latin works popular for classical guitar, as well as two pieces by American composer Gary Schocker that were written just for two harps. We will have video clips available on our Facebook page very soon--including a special "Pedal Cam" that will allow you to watch how busy Emily's feet were during the performance!

Two weeks before this performance, we did receive the disappointing news that our future requests to use the City Council Chambers as a concert venue will be denied. So onward we go in search of the best acoustics in Frisco.  Luckily we have found several local churches eager to host our programs, and we are looking forward to our upcoming concerts at Expedition Frisco and St. Francis of Assisi! (As always, we encourage you to contact the Frisco City Council members to speak in support of the arts.)

November 14 saw Astraios turn 9 years old, which is quite difficult to believe. We've come a long way from an infant organization that literally paid the musicians in cookies for the first performance. But our mission has stayed the same--to find new and creative ways to connect audiences and performers, and to provide a comfortable and informal environment for classical music. Thanks for being part of the journey!
