DFW Brass Concert

On March 25, Astraios was thrilled to present the DFW Brass at St. Francis of Assisi Church here in Frisco. Adam Miller and Lacey Hays, trumpets, Heather Suchodolski, horn, Jon Hinton, trombone, and Carl Kleinsteuber, tuba, performed works that covered everything from Renaissance fanfares to a country rock ballad.

St. Francis is a huge space (seating 1500) and has lush acoustics, perfect for a brass quintet. DFW Brass performed works by local composer John Wasson, Anthony DiLorenzo's Nexus, a thrilling work that was meant to sound like a 90-piece orchestra, and the well-known Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst. When they performed Die Bankelsangerlieder, we split the quintet up across the church so the antiphonal effects would carry. In an unusual move, we allowed the audience to get up and move to hear the split group from wherever they liked. Some chose to sit near their favorite instrument, others moved to the back of the church to take in the full effect without having to swivel like a tennis match. In a (highly unsophisticated) video below you can get a sense of the effect.

Thanks to the quintet for letting us put them in a dicey position! As you might imagine, the reverb coming from the stone and wood in the church creates a tricky acoustical environment when you are that far away from your fellow musicians. Not only were they good sports, but they performed admirably!

Astraios is now in full planning mode for our 2017-2018 season. We will announce our season in late spring once everything is confirmed with venues. Be on the lookout for some new Astraios videos, too, as we head into our 10th anniversary season!
